About the Trek
The Digital Imaging Trek (TM) is a study abroad option offered through the International Center and the School of Technology at Johnson & Wales University. The Digital Trek is an intensive four week travel and study opportunity to world capitals such as Paris and London. During the Trek, students learn the practice of digital photography, digital videography, digital content creation and creative asset exhibition through digital channels such as the trek web site.
Students also learn about world culture, history and sociology through a mobile class taught in real time at these international locations. The positioning of digital imaging and sociological observation methodology create a unique learning experience for students who must master the science of field work through the view of a lens. Students create rich visual assets that explore themes such as architecture, power, religion, family, commerce etc., and compare and contrast two different cultures (France and Great Britain). The daily activities of the Digital Trek are varied but always intensely focused. Students learn a wide range of technical approaches to image acquisition, storage, editing and exhibition while living in the culture which they are studying.
The Trek is a transformative experience for young American travelers. The students have had extensive technical training and done sociological research and writing before their departure. They earn university credits and create an extensive image data base for use by the school community. The results of their work, both journals and images, can be explored at this site.
